Depression is one of the most abused words in the world. A serious mental health illness has been used as an object of mockery, camouflage, and even deceit.
According to Wikipedia,’Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity. It can affect a person’s thoughts, behavior, motivation, feelings, and sense of well-being.’
Like any other disease, there are signs that point to the state of the sickness of the individual. Yes, depression is a sickness of the mind and should be treated as such.
Here are the signs to look out for in a depressed person
1. Sudden Sadness
It a common feature of depression to be suddenly overwhelmed by sadness. Most times, you don’t actually have an explanation for the sadness. You can be in a very happy stat this minute and be filled with sadness in the next.
2. Difficulty in thinking and concentration
You’ll find it difficult to focus your mind on one thing. Finding your mind wandering like the wind. In such time, you’ll find it difficult to perform a task in due time.
3. Loss of interest
You’ll begin to lose interest in things that normally interest you. You’ll find yourself constantly saying No to your hobbies.
4. Loss of the feeling of pleasure
Nothing will ever satisfy you. No matter how excellent you are, you’ll still struggle with the emptiness from irrelevance. Activities that normally leave you basking in laughter leave you in regret of even trying at all.
5. Imbalance in appetite
You notice that often times there are no logical explanations for the constant rise and fall in your desire for food. A pie that normally gets you drooling leaves you in disgust at its sight. This can be followed by a rapid loss or gain of weight.
6. Sleep Disorder
There will be records of nights when you struggle to sleep and nights when you struggle to stay out sleep. It dwindles like a sea-saw. At certain times, you’ll find yourself jerking suddenly from sleep and hitting another level of sadness.
7. No interest in socializing
Depression leaves you with a desire to constantly be alone. You don’t want to talk to anyone or even have any form of interaction. In very severe cases, people actually resign from work and lock themselves in for days. Ignoring calls and messages becomes the order of the day.
8. Low Self Esteem
You begin to lose confidence in your own abilities. You constantly doubt the possibilities of you achieving any goal.
9. Suicidal thoughts
You constantly battle with the thought of not having a reason to be alive. You question the essence of living if you have to battle with so much darkness. A poison or a gun looks like a gateway from pain.
In Major Depressive Disorders, you begin to hear voices and even see things others don’t acknowledge being present. You find yourself constantly trying to describe the appearance of things or people only you can see.
